US Forest Service Projects

US Forest Service

Project Description

Currently I am engaged with the company PowTec who has me working on several US Forest Service web projects. The main project is taking the former Drupal 7 site and converting it to a responsive and more editor friendly experience.

As I did with NBCNews.com, I am driving the adoption of a common core profile that all US Forest Service properties can be based on.

2013 Grammy Awards

55th Grammy Awards

Project Description

Building an internationally recognized and televised event site is no small ordeal! I was part of a large team of people working to make the Grammy’s site a reality by the big date. My tasks were related to converting a fairly static design into a responsive design that would work well on any screen size.

This was a fast paced and high pressure project, but one I would never have missed. What an experience!

Intricate Responsive Design

Most of my work on this site was related to converting most of the static parts of the site into something responsive, making mobile users happy!

This part was a little different. Using only CSS I was to create the interestingly shaped colorful boxes, that would also be responsive. A great challenge, and extremely fun!

Peninsula College Site

Peninsula College

Project Description

My good friend (and awesome designer) Danny McNerney contacted me to ask if I could offer some assistance with a local college that needed more than a WordPress site, and needed to have something more flexible than the Sitepoint solution that was being offered to them.

The requirements were that we have three different web properties but all three needed to be administered in a common place, the we do better on time and budget than SitePoint people had offered, and that I help Danny and the project owner understand how to use the site.

For this project I took Danny’s existing design, and using that, created a detailed estimation of the project with assumptions so that the project owner had a good idea of budget and timeline. The customer was blown away by the level of detail and budget.

We got this project done in good time and under budget. Happy customer as usual!

Start Right - End Right

The secret to the success to this project was working through the expectations and details before we got started. The institution needed the project to be completed within a very specific budget, and by using a very detailed estimation tool, I was able to work with the customer to get the project inline with the budget.

Every view, field, and menu item was considered, for all three sites. Proper prior planning provides Pencol pretty perfect performance!

Multiple Domains

This site required having three different distinct properties, one for the school’s main site, one for their athletics department, and one for the non-profit foundation.

To answer this need, I utilized the “Domains” contributed module. This module allows for different theme, different menu, different content, to be aimed at each domain or sub-domain you setup, while all being administered from one place.

Intuit Knowledge Base Site

Intuit Knowledge Base Site

Project Description

In 2009, Acquia, a company that I am a partner of, called and asked if it would be possible to do a job in a hurry for a neighbor of theirs. It was Intuit, and they needed an entire Drupal installation themed and modules setup, in 4 days.

After a quick conference call with all of the involved parties, I got to work right away to get the business details in order. Within a day, all contracts, NDA’s, and plans were delivered and approved.

Because time was of the essence, and knowing that everyone was on board, I didn’t wait. Once the verbal ok had been delivered, I had set the development environment up, gotten Zen installed, and gotten started dissecting the single graphic file I had been sent as a design template.

Within 2 days, all major components were themed, and the site was sitting on Intuit’s servers, waiting for review. At that point, the site was usable, and clean, and only a few minor changes needed to be made before the stakeholders at Intuit gave the site their OK!

Extra Functionality

Intuit was not only interested in having me apply a theme, but also to build in extra functionality, such as a category driven menu, a rating system, related content, and a tag cloud system.

I accomplished this using several contributed modules, and modifying them at the theme level to integrate correctly with their new front-end design.

Major Country Success, New Site, New Look

While I was working as employee #3 with Commerce Guys, they picked up a fantastic opportunity to put a new look on the site of the multi-award winning Country Music sensation, Lady Antebellum. The task was more than just revamping the look of the site however, it was also to create a platform that the customer could use as a platform to launch other sites from, a profile that included musician specific traits as well as a commerce element.

Grid-based Design

Lady-A needed a new, clean and organized appearance for their new site. A grid-based design was a perfect fit for the grids, lists, and other elements that needed a larger degree of consistency.

Repeatable Architecture

This project was to be a starting block for MCN to be able to quickly launch other musician sites. The requirement was to create a profile that would allow the replication of the musician structure, commerce platform, and a base theme that could easily be extended.
