US Forest Service Projects

US Forest Service

Project Description

Currently I am engaged with the company PowTec who has me working on several US Forest Service web projects. The main project is taking the former Drupal 7 site and converting it to a responsive and more editor friendly experience.

As I did with NBCNews.com, I am driving the adoption of a common core profile that all US Forest Service properties can be based on.

NBCNews.com and Today.com

NBCNews.com and Today.com

Project Description

Originally I was hired by msnbc.com to work on the transition of msnbc.com to NBCNews.com. This was an epic job opportunity, and I jumped in with both feet.

During my time here, I helped craft the entire editorial interface, the place where the news gets made and sent on it’s way to be displayed on the web, in your phone, on the Roku, anywhere it ends up.

After conquering NBCNews.com’s back-end, we moved on to do the exact same thing with Today.com

A Common Core

One of the biggest things that I had the opportunity to participate in while at NBCNews.com was the creation of a common base profile that would be used for other Comcast properties, such as Today.com.

This part of the project entailed carving the parts out of Drupal that would be common to all Comcast web properties, such as the structure of news articles, or image metadata, and putting those things into a profile that would allow future developers to easily launch a new site.

This was made easier because of the headless nature of our Drupal sites.

Headless Drupal

One of the most interesting parts about working on the NBCNews.com site is the fact that the site that you enter news into isn’t the same site that displays that news. NBCNews.com utilizes Drupal for content entry, but uses Javascript to render the final website.

This also allows NBCNews.com to shuffle the content around any way they like before outputting it. It also allows for distribution of the content to any type of device, but all entered in one familiar environment.

Enter once, use everywhere!

2013 Grammy Awards

55th Grammy Awards

Project Description

Building an internationally recognized and televised event site is no small ordeal! I was part of a large team of people working to make the Grammy’s site a reality by the big date. My tasks were related to converting a fairly static design into a responsive design that would work well on any screen size.

This was a fast paced and high pressure project, but one I would never have missed. What an experience!

Intricate Responsive Design

Most of my work on this site was related to converting most of the static parts of the site into something responsive, making mobile users happy!

This part was a little different. Using only CSS I was to create the interestingly shaped colorful boxes, that would also be responsive. A great challenge, and extremely fun!

Intuit Knowledge Base Site

Intuit Knowledge Base Site

Project Description

In 2009, Acquia, a company that I am a partner of, called and asked if it would be possible to do a job in a hurry for a neighbor of theirs. It was Intuit, and they needed an entire Drupal installation themed and modules setup, in 4 days.

After a quick conference call with all of the involved parties, I got to work right away to get the business details in order. Within a day, all contracts, NDA’s, and plans were delivered and approved.

Because time was of the essence, and knowing that everyone was on board, I didn’t wait. Once the verbal ok had been delivered, I had set the development environment up, gotten Zen installed, and gotten started dissecting the single graphic file I had been sent as a design template.

Within 2 days, all major components were themed, and the site was sitting on Intuit’s servers, waiting for review. At that point, the site was usable, and clean, and only a few minor changes needed to be made before the stakeholders at Intuit gave the site their OK!

Extra Functionality

Intuit was not only interested in having me apply a theme, but also to build in extra functionality, such as a category driven menu, a rating system, related content, and a tag cloud system.

I accomplished this using several contributed modules, and modifying them at the theme level to integrate correctly with their new front-end design.
